IISD appoints Håkan Nordström—trade policy expert—as senior associate

WINNIPEG—January 23, 2015—The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Håkan Nordström as a senior associate.

As a senior associate at IISD, Håkan will focus on trade and climate change issues, including the prospect of forming a transatlantic carbon market in the context of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations between the European Union and the United States.

Dr. Nordström is a Swedish economist specializing in international trade policy and sustainable development. He is a renowned expert on the links between trade and climate change.

Dr. Nordström previously worked in the Economic Research and Analysis Division of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (the predecessor to the World Trade Organization) in Geneva, Switzerland. His work there included modelling of the economic effects of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations, which came into effect in 1995. In 2001 he was appointed deputy director of the WTO unit of Sweden’s National Board of Trade (Kommerskollegium) and in 2003 he was promoted to chief economist of the Board, serving in the office of the Director-General. He has written several scholarly articles on sustainable development issues.

Dr. Nordström holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Stockholm University (1992) as well as a B.Sc. in economics from Stockholm University (1985).
