WINNIPEG—June 14, 2013—The International Institute for Sustainable Development has appointed Dr. Robert Repetto, former World Resources Institute economist and economics professor at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, as senior fellow to assist with IISD's natural capital, ecosystems, freshwater and China work.
The Institute has also appointed Robert B. Smith, an environment-economy linkages consultant and former Statistics Canada director, environment accounts and statistics division, as an associate to assist IISD with its natural capital, ecosystems and China work.
"Robert Repetto is one of the world's leading environmental economists and one of the pioneers in integrating environmental costs and benefits into such core economic systems as national income accounts and how stock markets handle risk," IISD president Scott Vaughan said. "His expertise will help IISD accelerate its work on setting out the economic rationale for climate mitigation, risk resilience and other priorities."
Vaughan said Smith's expertise will assist IISD with its work in measurement and knowledge management. "One of the biggest challenges policy-makers face is understanding the avalanche of data and information required to make good decisions. Robert Smith is one of the world's most respected leaders in environmental statistics and data, and natural capital and green national accounting."
