June 25, 2021

The World Trade Organization is set to host a ministerial meeting on July 15 to review an advanced negotiating text, with the aim to reach an agreement to end subsidies that drive overfishing as soon as possible. After 20 long years of negotiations, policy-makers are closer than ever to creating a deal that will help protect the ocean’s ability to provide food, jobs, and income to countless communities across the globe.

The chair of the negotiations, Ambassador Santiago Wills of Colombia, tabled a new draft consolidated text on June 30 which sets out several proposed substantive disciplines and highlights issues that remain to be resolved.

IISD expert Alice Tipping took a closer look at the June negotiating text and laid out exactly what will be on the table at the negotiations. Watch the video to find out more.
