Compagnie Française d’Assurance pour le Commerce Extérieur (Coface) is a French private credit insurer that operates globally. Their Single Risk insurance products are guarantees that protect French companies and financial institutions operating abroad against payment defaults of clients due to commercial and political reasons. Covered risks include changing legislation, contract breaches, expropriation, nationalization, armed conflicts, labour unrest, acts of terrorism.

The insurance product can be designed flexibly to cover the client´s needs and risks. Coface offers multi-country, multi-debtor and single- or multi-risk protection solutions. Among others, the following guarantees are offered:

• Political risk guarantee
• Export and domestic guarantee
• Investment guarantee

The Single Risk solution is generally provided to companies and financial institutions exposed to commercial and political risks abroad. Eligible sectors or type of transactions are not specified.

Coface regularly conducts country risk assessments and provides ratings for 160 countries, from A (very low business defaulting risk) to E (extreme risk). For Single Risk insurance, Coface studies on a case-by-case basis all requests for investment in category A to D countries. Countries rated with a risk category E are not eligible; these are:

• Europe: Montenegro
• Middle East and North Africa: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen.
• Sub-Saharan Africa: Burundi, Eritrea, Mozambique, Somalia, Sudan, Zimbabwe.
• Latin America and Caribbean: Cuba, Venezuela.
• Asia and Pacific: Afghanistan, North Korea, Timor-Leste.
