Overseas Investment Insurance (Investment Financing)
Instrument Description
The Korea Trade Insurance Corporation (K-Sure) is the official export credit agency of South Korea under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The Overseas Investment Insurance offers coverage to banks that provide loans to Korean overseas developers that require large-scale and long-term financing.
Risks covered:
- “Commercial Risks: Bankruptcy of the main stakeholder of overseas developers, bankruptcy of domestic developers and defaults.
- Political Risks: War, expropriation, failure to execute agreements and irresistible risks, money transfer risks.”
Eligible Projects and Transactions
Financial institutions seeking this insurance must be of South Korean origin. Eligible projects include natural resources, property, mergers and acquisitions.
Eligible Regions
Global coverage, but projects and transactions are awarded insurance on a case-by-case basis.
Overseas Construction Works Insurance
Instrument Description
The Korea Trade Insurance Corporation (K-Sure) is the official export credit agency of South Korea under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The Overseas Construction Works Insurance product addresses risks for contractors pursuing overseas construction projects. It covers losses caused by political or project owners’ commercial risks. Risks covered:
- Political and commercial risks of construction and technology services
- Political risks (expropriation, war, money transfer) that affect construction equipment
Eligible Projects and Transactions
Construction projects. Policyholders must be of South Korean origin.
Eligible Regions
Global coverage but projects and transactions are awarded insurance on a case-by-case basis.
Overseas Investment Insurance
Instrument Description
The Korea Trade Insurance Corporation (K-Sure) is the official export credit agency of South Korea under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The Overseas Investment Insurance instrument can provide coverage for the principal, dividends, and interest of Korea’s diverse overseas investments, and guarantees compensation to the insured party in the case of default due to:
- “Expropriation risks: Foreign governments’ seizure of stocks, deprivation of claim rights to dividends (interest), freezing of accounts, deprivation of mineral rights or ownership rights owned by Korean investors
- War risks: Counterparty to the investment not being able to conduct business or use real estate due to losses suffered from war, revolt, insurgent, riot, upheaval, etc.
- Risks of failure to execute the agreement: In case that transfer of proceeds from selling stocks, loan settlement or dividends to Korea is not possible for more than two months due to foreign governments limiting or preventing transfer
- Money transfer risks: In case conducting business becomes impossible due to foreign governments and others failing to perform major agreements (limited to those approved by K-SURE) by counterparties to insurable investments
- Force majeure: In case conducting business becomes impossible due to force majeure such as typhoons, floods, earthquakes, tidal waves, strikes, nuclear accidents etc. or economic sanctions imposed by international organizations such as the UN or countries other than the counterparty nation to investment.”

Investment in stocks, properties and other rights, or loans, surety obligations, etc.
Policyholders must be of South Korean origin.
