Political risk and sovereign credit insurance products
Instrument description
Sovereign Risk Insurance Ltd. is a private insurer and wholly owned by Chubb Bermuda Insurance Ltd. It offers a range of political risk and sovereign credit insurance products that provide coverage for lenders, private equity investors and corporations against risks of payment default. Sovereign Risk Insurance also provides coinsurance and reinsurance solutions for export credit agencies and multilateral agencies. Risk categories that can be covered:
- Expropriation
- Currency inconvertibility/exchange transfer
- Political violence
- Sovereign and sub-sovereign non-payment
- Unfair calling of bonds
- Non-repossession of aircraft or other mobile equipment
Other customized covers, such as trade embargoes and license cancellations
Eligible projects and transactions
All types of infrastructure projects can be covered.
Eligible regions
Products are offered in most emerging economies. Exceptions are countries that are at risk of sovereign defaults and countries listed under the sanction program of the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Controls. The following countries are currently excluded: Afghanistan, Balkan countries, Belarus, Central African Republic, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela, Yemen and Zimbabwe.

- Size of coverage: Maximum coverage per project is USD 80 million.
- Tenor of coverage: Up to 15 years.
- Costs: The premiums depend on a country’s risks, tenor and coverage requirements.
