WINNIPEG, September 17, 2019—The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) made significant strides in the past year toward its objectives of fair economies, fresh water and a stable climate by working through powerful partnerships.

The organization’s Annual Report 2018-2019: The Power of Together showcases some of the ways it made an impact by bringing together unlikely suspects, sharing knowledge and experience between countries, and encouraging new ideas and unique approaches.

“There is no easy solution to the urgent, complex and interlinked challenges the world is facing, and IISD certainly hasn’t spent the year trying to find one,” said Jane McDonald, interim IISD President and CEO.

“Rather, we focused—as we always have—on solutions grounded in collaboration. We recognize it will take the collective weight of business leaders, civil society, engaged citizens, researchers and global power brokers to overcome the inertia that endangers us all.”

The report features highlights such as helping Fiji develop and communicate its first national plan on climate change adaptation, a new partnership to guide investments and decisions on how to end hunger sustainably, and work with industry associations in Canada to find best practices for oil spill cleanup in freshwater environments.

“This year, Britain’s Prospect Magazine named us 2019’s Think Tank to Watch, in addition to giving us awards for our foreign affairs work and contribution to science, health, environment and energy,” said McDonald. “We are incredibly honored to be recognized as having some of the ‘most original, influential and rigorous work’ of think tanks around the world.”
