Ari Shapiro is a post-doctoral investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. He is researching behavorial response of beaked whales and pilot whales exposed to sonar. He received is PhD in June 2008 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where his research topics included: foraging behavior and vocal syntax of Norwegian killer whales; testing for behavioral response of sperm whales exposed to mid-frequency sonar; movements and signature vocalizations of narwhals; application of a pitch tracking algorithm to killer whale calls; transmission loss of acoustic harassment devices; behavior of Alaskan transient killer whales. When not observing whales, Ari has also worked as a radio producer and has performed in numerous plays at both MIT and St. Andrews, including a starring role in Macbeth.
