Twig Johnson received his Ph.D. in ecological anthropology from Columbia University, doing fieldwork among small scale fishermen in Portugal, Brazil and Anegada (BVI). He has participated in many international sustainable development negotiations as a member of US, UN or NGO delegations. He is currently on leave from the Policy and Global Affairs Division of the National Academy of Science where he developed a Science for Sustainability Initiative. Government experience includes: the US Agency for International Development as Director of the Office of Environment and Natural Resources, Director of the Office of Regional Sustainable Development for Latin America; Chief of the Policy Studies Division and of the UN Division; Peace Corps as Peace Corps/Brazil Volunteer and as Country Director. United Nations experience includes UNICEF as Chief of Evaluation and Planning. Experience in the NGO community includes: Executive Director, Center for Field Research, Earthwatch, and Regional Director and VP for Latin America of the World Wildlife Fund. He has also been Chair of the Tropical Ecosystems Directorate of US Man and the Biosphere Program, and a member of the International Advisory Group of the Pilot Program for the Amazon (Brazil, G-7, and World Bank). He likes to spend quality time with people he cares about, ideally on or next to the sea, and was recently sworn in as Assistant Harbormaster and Deputy Shellfish Commissioner of Kingston, Massachusetts.
