Promoting the Development of Agricultural Cooperatives

Author: Sara Elder, Florencia Sarmiento

Agricultural cooperatives can help small-scale farmers access training and inputs to boost their productivity and mitigate climate change risks, and improve their access to higher-value markets.

This paper provides recommendations to governments in the Global South seeking to promote agricultural cooperatives. It focuses on two main areas: building a supportive regulatory, institutional, and infrastructural environment and implementing targeted initiatives for professionalizing and sustaining cooperative operations. By taking action in these areas, governments can help maximize cooperatives’ potential to contribute to farmer livelihoods and climate resilience.
