Coal and Renewable Energy: Building a sustainable electricity sector in China
煤炭与可再生能源: 建设可持续的中国电力行业
In 2014 China cut coal use for the first time in more than half a century while investments in renewable energy increased by a reported 39% to US$ 83 billion. To discuss the ongoing shift from coal to renewable energy in China, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the International Forum on Clean Energy (IFCE) will host an event in Beijing on 16th September. The event will include experts from government agencies, academia and civil society.
Coal remains central to the Chinese energy mix, though concerns over the environmental impact of coal-use, coupled with industrial policy objectives have created a pressure to adopt cleaner forms of energy production. However, the coal industry is still important for the electricity sector in China and is still the recipient of numerous subsidies. Furthermore, the unprecedented expansion of renewable energy brings with it challenges both in terms of funding and in terms of integration in the electricity grid.
This workshop will attempt to navigate the complex landscape of subsidies, regulation and targets to understand how China can best meet its energy needs taking into account social, economic and environmental considerations. Interested participants should register with Luke Cheng at luke.cheng [at} iisd.org.
