Mapping India’s Energy Subsidies 2020: Fossil Fuels, Renewables and Electric Vehicles
This webinar will mark the launch of IISD and CEEW’s latest update of energy subsidy data in India, Mapping India’s Energy Subsidies 2020: fossil fuels, renewables, electric vehicles.
Transparency about energy subsidies is important so people can understand what support measures exist, how much they cost and how they perform with respect to stated policy objectives.
The study examines how the Government of India (GoI) has used subsidies to support different types of energy, highlighting the most significant developments from FY 2014 to FY 2019. We seek to answer: How have India’s energy subsidy policies changed? What have been the most significant developments in India’s dynamic energy policy environment? And is public support aligned with India’s desired energy future?

Christopher Beaton, International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), Global Subsidies Initiative (GSI)
Karthik Ganesan, Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW)

We want to acknowledge that we are organizing this webinar in extraordinary circumstances, given the terrible impacts of COVID-19 on health and livelihoods in India. There are uncertain times ahead and the first priority has to be health and helping people meet their essential needs. At the same time, we cannot lose sight of ambition for a clean energy transition. We look forward to discussing what the current situation will mean for government interventions in the energy sector—and how experiences from the past two years can help inform the future.
